Green Award Benefits the Environment and the Ship Owner

August 15, 2011

Many ports around the world are offering incentives to shipping companies that are using technology that reduces the environmental impact on the port waters. One such organization that works for the ports and the ship owners is the Green Award. It works like this. Ships (bulkers and oil tankers > 20,000 DWT) have to meet certain criteria as laid out by the independent, non-profit Green Award Foundation. If they meet and maintain this certification, they receive a reduction on port fees. Participating ports are located in Belgium, Canada, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Oman, New Zealand, Portugal and South Africa. Sounds like a win-win situation so it’s surprising only 30+ companies are participating (however, the port list is not very large either). More details are found here: http://www.greenaward.org
