Ship owners who are thinking about building ships for the future need to consider a bunch of operational issues.  If trading global, you need to be aware of the different marine legislation – both current and future - especially in North America, Europe and Polar Regions. Concerns relating to the prevention and reduction of pollution from ships are continuing to grow within the European Union, the international maritime community and among the general public, and they will likely continue to do so in the future.

Good for the environment! No risk of oil pollution fines! Reduced operating costs!

Can this all be true?  If you are like the majority of global ship owners using oil lubricated white metal propeller shaft bearings, the cost of aft seal maintenance and the risk of oil discharges from a stern tube is always present.  However, if you look at Canadian bulk carrier owners, Algoma Central Corp. and Canada Steamship Lines (CSL), both are benefiting from the decision to use the pollution free propeller shaft bearings systems on their new ships.

Why settle for oil-based lubricants on your ship?

Another article has recently been published providing decent information on the Vessel Discharge Evaluation and Review Act in the United States.  As it relates to the VGP, oil-based lubricants ARE considered to be pollutants so don’t be fooled into thinking that pollution-free alternatives do not exist.

After just having spent a week at the SMM (Shipbuilding Machinery and Marine Technology) trade fair in Hamburg, Germany, it would hardly seem like a slowdown in the global marine market. With over 2000 exhibitors from 58 countries and 50,000 visitors, all 11 Halls at Hamburg Messe Congress Centre were completely full.
