Bearings for Wave / Tidal / River Power

marinebearings

The world’s oceans are a vast global resource of non-polluting, endlessly renewable energy and with the ever increasing demand for electrical power, harnessing this force has become a major priority. Many companies and countries have invested heavily in developing systems that will generate power and yet still withstand the harsh underwater environment.

Thordon Bearings is the world’s leading manufacturer of high performance, long lasting bearing systems that require no oil or grease. Our polymers offer the best combination of strength/stiffness with flexibility/elasticity, along with high abrasion resistance.

For over 35 years, we’ve been supplying environmentally friendly bearing solutions for thousands of hydro turbine and marine applications across the globe. Our customers include Power Generating Plants as well more than 40 Navies and Coast Guards, cruise ships, tankers, ferries, dredgers and many other types of commercial ships.

Thordon’s non-polluting and maintenance free bearings are available worldwide through our factory trained distributor network that spans more than 100 countries. Our application engineers and global technical support will work with you to deliver innovative bearing solutions.

Thordon offers a choice of water-lubricated bearings, each delivering specific advantages in unique water environments and operating conditions. Bearings are available in sizes up to 1.2m (4’) and bearings with multiple pad segments up to 3m+ (10’+).

The Move to Water Pays for Norway's Raanaasfoss Hydro Plant Operator

    Jun 17, 2019
The water-lubricated SXL turbine guide bearings Thordon installed as part of the re-powering of Norway’s Raanaasfoss 1 hydro plant have experienced almost zero wear after 23,887 hours of continuous operation on the first installed unit. During routine inspections of the 13.5 MW turbines, commissioned by Voith Hydro in 2013, the guide bearings – the operator’s first experience with water-lubricated bearings – showed “almost no wear at all”, with a measured diametric bearing clearance less than 0.30mm (0.012”) on the longest running Unit 1. All remaining turbines (Units 2 to 6) had very low measured diametric clearances of between 0.30 and 0.50mm (0.012” and 0.020”).

Thordon Bearings' Sister Company T-G DNALOP Purchases Polish Hydropower Plant to Develop New Turbine Technology

    Mar 25, 2019
Thordon Bearings' sister company T-G DNALOP has purchased the small Struzyska hydroplant in Pila, Poland, 180km south of its bearing and seal production facility, in Slupsk. The Struzyska plant operates three small turbines capable of generating 67kW of electrical power. Once two of the turbines have been refurbished and are back onsite, the Canada-headquartered company will operate the plant commercially, supplying electricity back to the grid.
